Unfortunately, potty training a puppy can take a lot of your time and usually doesn’t happen overnight. For many dogs, it can take six months for him to be completely trained with having no accidents. Here are some tips that will help you train your puppy faster.

Keep your dog attached to a lead and with you whenever you are home. This is very helpful for potty training purposes, and it also lets you keep a close watch on him. Then you can praise and reward him for things he does right and immediately correct him with a firm “no” for things he is still doing wrong. Just like children, young dogs will give clues that they need to go to the bathroom. If you pay close enough attention, you will quickly discover what these signs are for your dog. For many dogs, they give a cue that they need to poop by sniffing the ground in a counter clockwise manner. When you see this behavior, right away use his lead to take him outside or to his designated spot. Tell him to go potty. If he goes, have a party. Make him know that you are proud of him and think he’s the best dog in the world.  Always keep treats nearby so you can give him instant positive feedback. Be sure not to let up on the praise and reward each time he does what you ask. If he starts to eliminate in the wrong place, use a firm “no”, pick him up and take him to right area. If he finishes there, reward him a treat and praise him.
